Ever since Bob Villa's This Old House, people have been fascinated with rehabbing their homes. Today, America's obsession with everything new has produced an entire cable channel called House and Garden TV, devoted to shows about renovating homes. Unfortunately, a complete overhaul of one's kitchen and bathroom can be well beyond most people's means. Those who do not have tens of thousands of dollars to upgrade their homes can still create a gorgeous new living space simply by replacing the flooring. Replacing worn, stained carpeting with brand new parquet can instantly revitalize a room while adding value to the property. Parquet is also easier to clean and maintain than carpet, as it does not hold on to dust and dirt, and can easily be swept with a dry mop or varnished to keep their shiny new look.
Parquetry is a type of wood that is used for flooring. This wood originally called parquet de Versailles was created in 1684 to replace inconvenient marble flooring which was difficult to wash and tended to rot. Today, parquet wood flooring comes in a variety of woods and colors including oak, walnut and cherry. Three popular types of parquet used for flooring is solid parquet, veneers and laminates. Solid parquet is made of solid wood, and is about 1.5 centimeters thick. This allows the wood flooring to be sanded as many times as needed to buff out stains and scrapes.
Veneer parquet is made of a layer of wood, which is then attached to a base of cheaper plywood. This allows the floors to be maintained and repaired by sanding as well, just like the wood flooring.
Laminates are the least expensive form of parquet, and is made of an image of wood which is attached to particle board. The clear laminate covering is meant to protect the floor boards, as laminates cannot be sanded or repaired like the other wood flooring.
Parquet wood flooring is usually made to fit together in a tongue and groove fashion, and can be installed in a variety of ways. In a floating floor, an underlay is placed over the existing floor to insulate against noise and absorb shock. The parquet wood flooring is then placed over the underlay, and locks together in the tongue and grooves. A more permanent solution is to nail the parquet through the tongue at a 35 degree angle, or by gluing the parquet to the subfloor.
Hardwood direct offers a variety of parquet wood flooring in a user friendly site. The user can choose from several drop down options including manufacturer, price per square foot, wood species, shade, width, thickness and construction type. The user can limit or expand their search criterion to whatever best suits their individual needs. Costs of the parquet range from $5.25 per square foot and up, depending on the type and style of wood chosen. The site also offers specifications, samples and suggested accessories for the individual who is looking to install their own parquet wood flooring. The site also offers general installation guidelines such as how to nail, staple or glue down the parquet.
For those who are unsure as to what type of parquet they should choose, sites such as Homeportfolio.com offer galleries of different styles and shades of parquet. Several intricate designs including Parisian and Baroque in many different colors can be found at this site, and enlarged.
The homeowner no longer has to spend tens of thousands of dollars to renovate their apartment or house. Simply replacing old worn out carpet with shiny new parquet can beautify any home at a reasonable cost. Doing so will lessen the cleaning required to maintain the flooring, and the owner can further enjoy the benefits of adding value to their home.
